Formed in Cologne, Germany in the late 1960's Can were certainly different, they could do just about anything. Avant-gard they certainly were but it's not unreasonable to say they were genuine experimental pioneers. Their debut album "Monster Movie" was released in 1969 and although they never achieved any massive record sales their imprint on the music scene of the day was deep enough to immortalise them to the extent that even today they are still frequently quoted as influences. Can recorded a total of eleven albums between 1969 an 1978 and made four trips to Maida Vale to record sessions for the Peel Program. This was the first.
The first time this session was broadcast it had no title. By the time the repeat broadcast came round it had acquired the title "Up The Bakerloo Line With Anne Nightingale".

I was listening to Annie's show right after John died, and she recalled that John had come up with the title of that track, as it didn't have one. He thought he'd have a little fun at Anne's expense, as, apparently, the phrase "up the bakerloo line" is a rather lewd double entendre.
