Oxford has thown up some great bands in it's time but I think it's fair to say that Meanwhile Back In Communist Russia must go down as one of the best, and strangest. They were one of those bands which just oozes creativity and although they were never really likely to be appreciated on a mass basis they carried on doing their own thing in their own way which surely is what it's all about. The band released their debut album "Indian Ink" through Jitter Records in 2001. Eight tracks of loops and guitar distortion with Emily Gray delivering her monologues in typical deadpan fashion. A second album "My Elixir ; My Poison" was released in 2003 through Truck Records.
In 2004 the band split up following the departure of Emily Gray. James Shames and Tim Croston went on to form a band called Mesaplex whose music I must confess I've never heard.
Meanwhile Back In Communist Russia recorded two Peel Sessions, both of which can be found below and also had a live performence at Birmingham Academy broadcast on the program.
