Flying Saucer Attack - Peel Session 5th April 1996

The first time I heard Flying Saucer Attack was sometime in the early nineties. It was a seven inch single called "Wish" and I think it was the second release by the Bristol noise maniacs. The first album was initially released on vinyl only and really impressed my although I remember wondering if it would appeal to anyone else. Obviously there was nothing to worry about because the record sold out in no time at all. It was re-released probably about a year later on CD bearing the slogan "compact discs are a major cause of the breakdown of society" which is a perfectly agreeable concept. I do believe that records with a lot of noise in them sound much better on vinyl. Actually just about everything sounds better on vinyl but I'm not getting into that argument again. If your new to the sound of Bristol's kings of distortion and like what you hear here the first singles compilation "Distance" is probably the best place to start.

This is the second Flying Saucer Attack Peel Session. The first was recorded and broadcast in 1994 and if anyone has a copy of this recording please get in touch.

Bit spooky this. Only last night I was having a conversation with Mr Vincent about The Popinjays. He asked me if I had the Peel Session and I said no. I wasn't even sure if one existed to be honest. I had a feeling they had recorded one for someone else but wasn't sure about Peel. And then this morning sat there in my inbox was an e-mail from a nice bloke called Aaron offering up the Popinjays one and only Peel Session. How weird is that. Anyway this is it, the one and only session The Popinjays recorded for the Peel program (or any BBC show by the looks of it). Sounds great as well. Cheers Aaron.

I think this session can only be described as a classic. Peel often complained of how difficult it was to actually get sessions from reggae artists and how they would be booked in but never turn up. This was never going to be a problem with Laurel Aitken though as he lived in England for most of his musical life, Leicester to be exact. The only real surprise is the fact that this was the only session he recorded for the Peel program. Laurel Aitken died from a heart attack on 2005.

This is suprisingly the only session Boston's Buffalo Tom recorded for the Peel program. It was recorded in 1990 around the time of their second (and best) album "Birdbrain" and includes two tracks from that album, the earlier single "Sunflower Suit" and "Bus" which if memory serves was it's b side. Buffalo Tom are still active and their latest album "Three Easy Pieces" was released in 2007.

Bogshed came blasting out of deepest darkest Yorkshire in 1985 with their debut 12 inch "Let Them Eat Bogshed" on Vinyl Drip Records. Their second single was released the following year on Starfish Records and preceded the bands classic debut album "Step On It" which appeared later that year.Bogshed recorded a total haul of five Peel Sessions before their demise in 1987. This was their last.

The Popguns - Peel Session 30th September 1990

The Popguns formed in Brighton in 1986 and their first release was a track called "Where Do You Go" which was contained on a flexi disk which was given away free with an issue of "How Many Beans Make Five", a Brighton fanzine of the mid to late eighties. Their first proper single "Landslide" was issued the following year through Medium Cool records whose roster also included acts such as The Waltones, The Siddleys and The Corn Dollies. The next two singles were in my opinion the best records the band produced. "Waiting For The Winter" & "Someone You Love" were released in 1990 on the interesting Midnight Music label. I say interesting not just because of the music but mainly because all of their singles were released on one sided seven inch singles which came in nice blue company branded sleeves and were therefore begging to be collected, which I did. The band released the album "Eugenie" in 1990 which was a compilation of just about every track the band had previously released and followed it with a couple more impressive singles including the particularly good "XXX" ep which was a four track twelve inch and included the brilliant "Put Me Through It & Living In Sin" a copy of this record should exist in everyone's collection.

The Popguns recorded two sessions for the Peel program, both of which come from the 1990 period. This was the second, broadcast in the autumn of that year.

New Fast Automatic Dafodils or New FADS as it's easier to call them formed in 1988 in Manchester. Their debut single "Lions" appeared the following year on Playtime Records and was quickly followed by the wonderful "Music Is Shit EP". Their debut album "Pigeonhole" appeared in 1990 along with what was in my opinion their finest tune, "Big" which reached number fourteen in that years Festive Fifty. An instrumental version of which appears in these sessions.

These are the first two session recorded for the Peel show and were originally released on one of those nice Strange Fruit EP thingys. A third was broadcast in 1993 which in time honoured fashion I seem to have mislaid.

I don't know very much at all about The Servants. I remember buying their "Disinterest" album which was released on Paperhouse Records in 1990 and thinking that this was a band which was sorely underrated.Their first release was a seven inch single called"She's Always Hiding" on Head Records in 1986 and I regret I still don't own a copy.

If you do want to hear more by The Servants the best place to start is with the Reserved Compilation which was released a while back through Cherry Red and can be purchased from Amazon amongst other places

This was their one and only Peel Session.

The Family Cat - Peel Sessions

I can't tell you much at all about The Family Cat. I remember buying "Remember What It Is That You Love" on Bad Girl Records in 1989 and rating it as one of the best tracks of the year. What I can tell you however is that The Family Cat recorded three Peel Sessions, the first in 1989, a second in 1990 and their final session in 1992 which unfortunately I don't have (if you do please get in touch).

I think the session versions of Steamroller and With A War far surpass the released versions. A different version of Steamroller was released as a single in 1992 and also appeared on their debut album "Furthest From The Sun" along with re-recorded versions of "With A War" & "Gameshow". I think I'm right in saying "Fearless" was never officially released.

Eek A Mouse - The Peel Sessions

These are both sessions Eek a Mouse recorded for the Peel program. Despite releasing his first album "Bubble Up Yu Hip" in 1980 it was 1983 before Eek a Mouse was invited to Maida Vale to record his first Peel Session by which time he was promoting the release of his fourth album "The Assassinator". This was actually a kind of double session of which this was the second half as the band had been in Maida Vale the previous day to record a session for Kid Jenson (broadcast on 12/10/1983). Peel often complained about reggae artists not turning up at Maida Vale despite being booked. There was no problem with Eek a Mouse however and he returned the following year for a second session.

Moose formed in London in 1990 and released their debut EP "Jack" through Hut Records the following year. The EP was well recieved and of course Mr Peel soon picked up on them and booked them for a session. Three EP's were released in 1991, all of them excellent but the following year the band moved off in a different musical direction for the release of their debut album "...XYZ" and didn't quite pull it off. This was the first of two sessions recorded for the Peel show the second being transmitted in February 1992.

Cud - 30th June 1987

This was the first of three sessions by Leeds band Cud. This session was recorded as a direct result of a demo tape which the band had sent to Peel, and suffice to say he was quite impressed with. Shortly afterwards the band signed to The Wedding Present's Reception record label for the release of their debut single "Mind The Gap". The bands debut album "When In Rome, Kill Me" emerged in 1989 on Imaginary Records and included the brilliant "Only A Prawn In Whitby" which if you haven't heard it sounds just as good as it's title.

The band recorded three sessions for the Peel program of which this is the first but I'm ashamed to say this is the only one I own. If anyone out there has the other two please get in touch.

The Samurai Seven formed in Oxford in 1997 and released their debut single the following year through local label Shifty Disco. Peel picked up on them from the start of course and the bands first session was transmitted in November 1998. I was pretty sure I had all five sessions recorded for the Peel program but something seems to have gone wrong somewhere along the line because I can only find three. Senseless Things - Peel Sessions

Senseless Things recorded five albums between 1989 and 1995. The first two were simply outstanding especially "Postcard CV" which was released through the Way Cool label in 1989 and is well worth tracking down. The band started to sound a little bit expired after they signed to Epic in 1993 which was probably a result of the production watering down the sound in an attempt to appeal to the mainstream market. The band recorded three sessions for the Peel show all of which were released by Strange Fruit in 1994 but are now alas quite hard to find.

Department S -

Department S grew out of the ashes of Guns For Hire which was a band formed just for fun in London in 1979. They didn't play their first gig however until August 1980 and recived a fine review in the NME. Shortly after they changed their name to Department S and released their debut single "Is Vic There" through Demon Records. After a while in the Indie charts the single entered the national charts, an event which would in the long term contribute to the demise of the band.Department S then signed to Stiff Records and released a couple more singles, but things were not going well. Poor sales and differences of opinon with the lable resulted in the band being dropped by Stiff, but not before recording what was supposed to be their debut album at a cost of £50,000.The album was finally released by Mau Mau Records in 1993.This was the only session they recorded for the Peel program.

Pooh Sticks - The Peel Sessions

Pooh Sticks came from Swansea and recorded two sessions for the Peel program. The first in 1988 is in my opinion far superior to the second which was recorded just one year later. Their debut self-titled album was released in 1988 through Fierce Records and was followed just a few months later by their second, the classic "Orgasm" album which surely deserves a place in any self respecting record collection. The band continued until 1995 but I think it's fair to say that the band had produced their most sterling work by 1990.

Pooh Sticks recorded two sessions for the Peel program, both of which were released by Overground Records in 1991 but that record is now pretty much impossible to locate. Hence...

Bongwater - 13th April 1991

Bongwater were the brainchild of New York producer/Shimmy Disc record label owner Mark Kramer. Their first release "Breaking No New Ground EP" in 1987 did exactly what it said on the tin and consisted of six very average cover versions. In 1990 however all thet changed. Kramer recruited New York performance artist Ann Magnuson to be the voice on what was to be one of the best albums of it's time. "The Power Of Pussy" was released on Shimmy Disc in 1990 and it's title describes the content perfectly. If you have never heard this record then you should try and find a copy. Every home needs one.Bongwater only recorded one session for the Peel program.

Quickspace - The Peel Sessions

Here are all three sessions from the rather exellent Quickspace. In case your not familiar with the band, they began releasing records in the early 1990's under the moniker Quickspace Supersport. They started life on the Too Pure record label and fitted in perfectly with their then roster which included the likes of Stereolab and Laika. Their first Peel session was broadcast in 1995 and the band would go on to record a further three sessions in 1996,1998 and 1999.

Unfortunately I don't have a copy of the 1995 session but I'm sure the other three will give you more than just an insight into this exellent, if sometimes strange band.

Culture - 11th January 1983

I think it's fair to say this is one of the best Peel Sessions of all time. Culture were regulars on the Peel program and "Lion Rock" in particular seemed to come up on quite a regular basis. This session was issued as a twelve inch through Strange Fruit in the 1980's but like most of the early Strange Fruit ep's is now almost impossible to find. The best way to gain maximum pleasure from this session is to lock all the doors and turn the volume up as high as possible.

If you are not familiar with Culture's "Two Sevens Clash" album then you really are missing a treat and as far as I'm concerned that record is one of the best reggae works of all time. It was re-issued last year through the Shanachie label and is an essential record to have in your home.

This was the second of three sessions Finitribe recorded for the Peel show and consists of three tracks which appeared on the Edinburgh bands "Noise Lust & Fun" album released in the same year through One Little Indian. This version of "Electrolux" sounds particularly fine.

Well I have to say it's good to be back and over the coming months this site will (all being well) become bigger and better than ever with sessions and programs all available side by side.

This is the first of two sessions Birdland recorded for the Peel program and captures the band at the peak of their powers. I remember seeing their blond moptops on the cover of NME around this time and thinking they just LOOK like their going to make a great noise, and of course they did. Their self-titled debut album was released the following year and think I've got a very attractive white vinyl copy somewhere in the collection. I do remember being somewhat dissapointed by the album because it sounded a bit over produced and polished taking away alot of the spirit of the band which undoubtedly comes shining through in this session.

Talulah Gosh - BBC Sessions

Formed in Oxford in 1986 Talulah Gosh were one of the best bands to come out of the C86 movement. They released five classic singles on Edinburgh's 53rd & 3rd label and certainly deserved more success than they had. These are the only session they recorded for the BBC, one for Mr Peel and one for Janice Long.

In the early nineties the band transformed themselves into Heavenly and released yet more classic singles and some great albums this time for the Sarah label.The transformations continued as the decade wore on, first into Marine Research and more recently Tender Trap.

No Means No seem to have been on the go forever yet if I was to say my knowlege of them is sketchy it would be a huge overstatement. The first record I heard by them was a 12" single back in 1989 called "The Power Of Positive Thinking EP" which took a fair hammering on the old turntable, not just because it was a good record but mainly because it would be guaranteed to make my dad come storming out of the living room and bellow upstairs something like "Get that shit off. You're not right in the head". He might have had a point about the "right in the head" bit but it was great fun, Bongwater's "Power Of Pussy" album used to work really well too.

Anyway this was the first or two sessions No Means No recorded for the Peel show.

Firehose or fIREHOSE as they seem to prefer it to be spelt formed in 1986 from the ashes of the Minutemen who had recently disbanded after the death of Dennes Boon. Their first album "Ragin' Full On" was released through SST in 1986 and was followed in 1987 by the classic "If'n" which any self respecting individual still has encased in a plastic sleeve protector just in case the inevitable cup of coffee gets accidentally kicked in it's direction, well that's the sort of thing which happens in my house anyway and you can't be too careful when it comes to your records.

This session, the only one Firehose recorded for the Peel program was recorded in 1988 around the time of the "Sometimes E.P." and represents a top performence from an often overlooked yet wonderful band.

Now you'd think I would be familiar with The Redskins being that they come from the same City which I have spent all my worldly days. The truth of the matter is however that this session is the first time I have ever heard the band....and yes I feel quite ashamed of myself. I think I'm right in saying that The Redskins released just one album, "Neither Washington Or Moscow" in 1986 and on the strength of this session I'll have to track down a copy.

I remember spending many hours in 1987 arguing with my mate Vince over whether The Darling Buds were better than The Primitives or not. I don't think we ever came to any firm conclusions. The first Darling Buds record I bought was "It's all up to you" which was released on Native Records and came in a very nice blue floral sleeve, a version of that track appears on this session.The Darling Buds come from Newport, South Wales and their debut album "Pop Said" was one of the best albums of 1988 spawning what seemed like an endless stream of singles and I'm sure I even saw them on Top Of The Pops at one point. Unfortunatly in my view the band went off the boil a bit after this and although their later work was ok, they just could not seem to maintain the standard of the first album.

Meat Whiplash were the fore-runner of Motorcycle Boy. Formed in Scotland in 1985. I suppose most people remember them for their fantastic "Don't Slip Up" single released that year through Creation Records but their was so much more to Meat Whiplash. This session features four tracks which to my knowlege have never being released. A huge shame because this session is quite brilliant. After Alex Taylor joined the band in 1987 they became known as Motorcycle Boy whose session from 14/9/1987 will be re-posted on this site in the near future.

The Great Leap Forward formed in 1987 as the solo project for former Big Flame member Alan Brown. The debut single "Controlling The Edges Of Tone EP" was released through Ron Johnson Records in April 1987 and was the first of four singles released between 1987 and 1989. The bands one and only album "Don't Be Afraid Of Change" was released in November 1989 and proved to be the final Great Leap Forward release.
...2007 and Alan Brown is back in the studio recording new Great Leap Forward material. We wait with baited ears.

I think it's fair to say that the first Smashing Pumpkins album was one of the best records of it's time. "Gish" was released through Hut Records in 1991 and was like a breath of fresh air in the then grunge dominated climate. Don't get me wrong the follow-up "Siamese Dream" was good as well but just didn't have the same effect on me as their classic debut.

This session was originally posted back in 2006.

This was The Fall's twenty fifth session for the BBC and was recorded towards the end 2005, although not broadcast until February 2006 on BBC Radio 3's Mixing It program. Of the four tracks contained here three appeared in a slightly different form on the brilliant Fall Heads Roll album. There are also two sections of interview on here which confirm beyond reasonable doubt that Mark E Smith is one of the hardest people on earth to interview.

Mega City Four - The Peel Sessions

Mega City Four formed in Farnborough in 1987. Their debut single "Miles Apart/Running In Darkness" was released in September 1987 through Mega City Records although it was re-issued the following year through Decoy Records who provided the band with a platform from which to launch a string of exquisit seven inch singles leading up to the bands debut album "Tranzophobia" in 1989.

A second album "Who Cares Wins" was released in 1990 and was followed by a compilation of the bands early singles called "Terribly Sorry Bob" which even today makes fine listening and for me captures Mega City Four at the height of their powers.

A further three albums were recorded, "Sebastopol Rd" (1992), Magic Bullets (1994) and Soulscraper (1996) shortly after which the band split.

Wiz went on to form Ipanema with whom he played until he tragically collapsed and died in December 2006.

Mega City Four recorded two sessions for the Peel program.

The sound is less than perfect but quite frankly, who cares. As one bloke in the audience shouts out after Sparta FC "Happy birthday you c**t". Couldn't have put it better myself.

I'm not sure what date this recording was actually broadcast as it clearly is a repeat. Don't let this deter you though as this is brilliant. Crass were one of the few punk bands who REALLY were genuine and not some kind of bandwagon jumpers. Formed in 1977 in Essex their first release was an eighteen track album called "The Feeding Of The 5000" and was released in 1978 through Small Wonder Records. Originally the album contained a track called "Reality Asylum" but it was removed after protests from workers in the pressing plant that the track was blasphemous. It was replaced with a track called "The Sound Of Free Speach" which was actually nothing more than a couple of minues of silence although this track sounds rather nice on my copy due to the amount of surface noise it contains. This prompted Crass to set up their own label "Crass Records" for their future releases so they could never be silenced again.

This is the only session Crass recorded for the BBC.

What better way to celebrate the release of a new Fall album than with one of their many live broadcasts. This set was recorded as part of Sound City 93 which was a week long event involving loads of bands playing at loads of venues across a chosen City. 1993 was the turn of Sheffield and just as they had been the previous year in Norwich, The Fall were invited to play. Unfortunatly this is not the full set but it's as much as was broadcast on the radio.

The Flatmates formed in Bristol in 1985. Their first single "I Could Be In Heaven" was released the following year on the rather brilliant Subway label. Several more singles followed, each one containing perfectly cut slices of perfect pop. Their first (and last) album was released in April 1989 just before the demise of the band.

Dinosaur Jr formed in Amherst, Massachusetts in 1983. Their debut album "Dinosaur" was released in 1985 through Homestead Records and the band quickly developed a reputation as one of the most exiting bands in a rapidly developing American scene which would years later be hijacked by commercial forces and be labeled grunge. Dinosaur were anything but commercial. Their next two albums "Your Living All Over Me" (1987) and "Bug" (1988) were nothing short of astounding and if you don't have these in your collection then you're really missing something. I think they were re-issued a couple of years ago through Merge Records so they should be easy to find. 1991 saw the release of "Green Mind" which despite lacking the raw power of their previous releases was still a fine record.

Dinosaur Jr recorded three sessions for the Peel program. This was the first.

The Would Be's were one of those bands who could have done so much more. They were four kids from Ireland (Dublin I think, but I could be wrong) who released one of the best singles of 1990. Their debut single "I'm Hardly Ever Wrong" reached number 12 in that years Festive 50.Unfortunatly the band only released one more single, a four track e.p. called "Silly Songs For Cynical People" before breaking up in 1991.

Cocteau Twins - 15th July 1982

This was the first session from the Cocteau Twins. Formed in Grangemouth in 1982 the band caught the attention of 4AD records guru Ivo Watts and released their debut album "Garlands" in the June. Naturally John Peel was amongst the first to recognise exellence of the band and request that they visit Maida Vale to record a session. The results of which can be heard below.

What can you say about Kevin Coyne. This guy recorded something in the region of forty odd albums between 1969 and his untimely death in 2004. Always unothodox and original, Kevin Coyne recorded no less than ten sessions for the John Peel show between 1973 and 1990.

The Mo-dettes began in London in 1979. An all girl punk band who never quite achieved the stautus they deserved. Their first release was a seven inch single called "White Mice" released on their own "Mode" label in 1979. Another five singles followed through the course of 1980/81 and one album "The Story So Far" which if you believed the music press at the time was weak. Listening to the album today though proves a rewarding experience. It easily stands up against anything from The Slits, The Raincoats or any of their peers.The Mo-dettes recorded three peel session of which this was the first. The second session was broadcast on 29/9/1980 and the final on 21/7/1981.

Art Brut are undoubtedly one of the most exiting bands around at the moment. They came to my attention last year just before the release of their classic debut album "Bang Bang Rock and Roll" which still get's the odd play in my house. I'm not sure about the exact date this session was broadcast but I'm sure that someone out there will and let me know. Art Brut have just released a new EP called "Nag Nag Nag Nag" which is quite frankly exellent and well worth a purchase for the B side...Damn, I still do that. How can a CD have a B side. What I meant to say was that the additional live tracks are fantasic as well, especially the version of Emily Kane.
Can't wait for the new album.

Bikini Kill - 30th April 1993

Formed in 1990 Bikini Kill were part of the Riot Grrrl movement of the early 1990's. Their debut EP was the "Bikini Kill EP" released on Kill Rock Stars in 1991. The band soon gained a reputation for being fiercly independent and never wanted anything to do with major labels, a true punk attitude sadly lacking in many of todays so called punk bands. In 1993 they released a split album with fellow feminist punkers Huggy Bear which in my opinion showed both bands at their very best and should hold a place in any self respecting punks record collection. Bikini Kill's first "proper" album Pussy Whipped was released in 1994 and many tracks from this essential record were played on Radio One by Mr Peel. The band released a second album "Reject All American" in 1996 and survived until 1998.
Sadly Bikini Kill recorded just the one Peel Session. It is however a bit of a classic.

I must confess I can't remember very much at all about this band. The first time I heard them was (as had been the case a thousand times before) on the Peel program. The track was "Injured Birds" and so impressed was I that I rushed down to my local decent record shop at the first opportunity only to discover that it was a Shifty Disco Singles Club release and as such was limited to 1000 copies. Not to be discouraged by this minor setback I promptly joined the single club and all was well. Ironicly a couple of months later the very same record shop started stocking Shifty Disco Singles Club releases. The band soon signed to Action Records and released a couple of blinding singles. I'm pretty sure there was an album as well which I don't seem to have a copy of. I'm sure somebody will let me know if this is the case and possibly even where I may find such an artefact.

Camera Obscura hail from Glasgow and were first heard on the Peel program in 1997 when he played their single "Your Sound" on his program. However it wasn't until 2001 that the band recorded their first Peel Session. Since then "The Cams" have recorded a futher three sessions plus a memorable live performance of "Little Donkey" on a Christmas program from Peel Acres in 2002.The band have released three L.P.s and numerous singles. Anyway this was the bands first session for the program.

Ride formed in the City of Oxford in 1988. Their debut E.P. was, to say the least a work of art and still gets the occasional play in my house to this day. Released in 1990 the "Ride EP" was nothing less than a work of art. The sleeve depicted blurred red roses and was followed a few months later by a second four track E.P. which would be covered in daffodills. Ride always had good sleeves for their E.P.s. Back then of course CD singles were still in their infancy and so most people bought the records on twelve inch vinyl, which incidently is still my prefered format because if, as is the case with Ride the sleeves are well thought out and interesting you have in your hands what could almost be described as a work of art. In the early nineties "indie" bands were almost obliged to put four tracks on their singles which obviously is a good thing for the buyer but I suspect a lot of work for the band. So after the first two E.P.s we already had eight tracks by the band which if collected would have made a bloody good debut album. The bands debut album soon followed and was itself an eight track monster. Entitled "Nowhere" I think it's fair to say that this record should take it's rightful place on the Classic Debut shelf.

This was the first session Ride recorded for the BBC and captures the band at the height of their powers.

Carcass - Peel Session 2nd January 1989

Carcass formed in Liverpool in 1985. They released their debut album "Reek Of Putrefaction" through Earache Records in 1988 and if I'm not mistaken the original cover of the album was banned for being generally disgusting. Carcass could frequently be heard on the John Peel show and recorded their first Peel Session just before the release of their second album "Symphonies of Sickness" in 1989. Around this time Peel was playing many thrash metal bands and most of them were perfectly good but the thing which made Carcass stand out was the brilliant song titles. Things like "Swarming Vulgar Mass of Infected Virulency" and "Manifestation of Verrucose Urethra". The band released a further five albums before their demise in 1995. Their final album "Swansong" was in my opinion bloody awful and should be steered well clear of. A shame really because Carcass certainly were, on the strength of their first three albums one of the leaders of what was in the late 1980's a very busy scene.
Carcass recorded two Peel Sessions. This was the first.

Clawfist Records - The Peel Sessions

This cute little number was released by Strange Fruit in 1991 and features sessions by two of the leading lights from the Clawfist label. Firstly there's Gallon Drunk who formed in 1988. Their debut single "Snakepit/Please Give Me Something" was released through their own Gallon Drunk Records label in 1988, although it was later re-issued through Clawfist in 1991 limited to 400 copies. The bands debut album "Tonight....The Singles Bar" was released in 1992 and was for me the best record the band made. It was simply a collection of tracks from the bands singles but it worked perfectly. The first proper Gallon Drunk album "You, The Night and The Music" was released later in the same year. Gallon Drunk only recorded one Peel Session which was broadcast on 1/9/1991 and...well, this is it.
Breed on the other hand I can tell you virtually nothing about. I think I've got a seven inch by them somewhere which if memory serves is called Splinter, errrrr that's it!

It's been far too long since we last saw Viv Stanshall up here so let's put things to rights with what was Viv's fifth session for the Peel show. I think I'm going to have to post Viv Stanshall sessions much more regularly because I know there are quite a lot of people who would like to hear them all and besides, this site is all about sharing. Back to this session and I'm not a hundred percent about the track listing. It was all broadcast as on piece as you will hear and that's the way I've left it but on the official sheets it states three tracks were broadcast. I listened to the session again yesterday and "Spades, Balls and Sausage Trees" and "Wheelbarrow" are definitely there, I'm not sure about "Aunt Florrie Recalls" but this is all that was broadcast and it is quite wonderful.

The Wedding Present - John Peel's 50th Birthday Bash 29th August 1989

This is a re-post of the files I originaly posted last year. A few people have been asking for this so here goes.
This set was recorded as part of a special night at Subterrania in London to celebrate John Peel's 50th Birthday. Other bands on the bill that night included The House Of Love and of course The Fall. I think The Wedding Present set was actually longer with "What Have I Said Now" as the first track but I'm pretty sure that this is all that was broadcast on the radio.
The Wedding Present have recently recorded a new session for the BBC which was broadcast a few weeks ago. It basically contained five cover versions. I'll post it on the site in a few weeks time.

The Teardrop Explodes - 24th April 1980

The Teardrop Explodes formed in Liverpool in 1978. They released their first single "Sleeping Gas" on Bill Drummond's Zoo record label in February 1979. The bands debut album "Kilimanjaro" was released in October of the following year and reached number 24 in the UK charts. 1981 was a big year for The Teardrop Explodes. Their "Reward" single reached the dizzy heights of number 6 in the UK charts and "Treason" number 18 so when it came to the bands second album expectations were somewhat high. "Wilder" was released at the end of 1981 and did not perform too well. Their days of being a popular chart band were over. After an extensive tour of Europe, U.S.A. and Australia the band went into the studio to record their third album. Tensions were high and the recording was never completed.
The Teardrop Explodes recorded three sessions for the John Peel program. This was their second.
