Transcode - Kingpin

To kick-start the Shadow Series, where we aim to introduce our listeners to some harder and darker sounds, emerges Transcode. The young Manchurian specialises in dark and melodic techno, already touted as an upcoming star by techno giants Stil Vor Talent.
His single see's two weighty remixes, the first of which is from German duo Kaiser Souzai, whom are popular among the European techno circuit and whom we are big fans of here in the Throne Room office. Kaiser Souzai's remix adds a main room element to the track, evolving the melody into what we can only describe as spectacular.
The second remix is one we are extremely honoured to line up under our label, a simply brilliant take from multi-platinum producer Glenn Morrison. Most will know Glenn Morrison from his work with industry leaders like Sony Records and Universal Music Group as a writer, producer and recording artist.
Rather than simply dipping our toes in the techno pool, Kingpin see's Throne Room dive in head first.

50FOOTWAVE - Bath White

This is well worth a listen. It's a brand new EP from former Throwing Muses Kristin Hersh's "other" outfit. What you have here is six tracks which stand up well in her ever growing repertoire.

Helen Love - Smash Hits

It feels like Welsh legends Helen Love have been making records for the best part of a lifetime without really changing very much. There's nothing wrong with that as Smash Hits clearly proves sounding as fun and fresh as their Formula One Racing Girls or Joey Ramoney singles did in the early nineties. I can't listen to this record without a smile invading my usually permanently miserable face. It's just that kind of record and to make it even better it arrives on beautiful Lucazade coloured vinyl although I think Alcopop records, who are responsible for the release prefer to call it Sunburst Super Kay Splatter or something like that. All you really need to know though is that this is a record which will cheer you up for a while at least, and that has to be worth the price of admission.

Ask For Joy - New Private Window

Ask For Joy has announced the second single 'Lovers Interred' from the new LP ‘New Private Window’, following up the first single ‘Pinprick Eyes’  This highly anticipated 7-track album maintains a tradition this artist has become well known for, with walls of shimmering reverb-drenched guitars, endearing vocals and expansive harmonic melodies.

Founded in 2005, Ask For Joy is the solo project of multi-instrumentalist and producer Aaron Rossetto. Based in Austin, Texas, artists like himself and Ringo Deathstarr are putting this city on the shoegaze map.

Combining the fuzzy warm shoegaze of Slowdive with the raw sonic power of bands like Jesus and Mary Chainand My Bloody Valentine, Ask For Joy manages to create a divine cacophony of what can literally be called beautiful noise. This new album shines a light into a slightly darker corners of the mind through the themes it explores.

“It’s fair to say that the material on New Private Window tends to the seedier side: the lighter and darker sides of substance abuse; a couple’s murder-suicide; sexually suggestive expressions of love and desire. These are the types of thoughts, feelings and behaviors that one might want to keep hidden from friends or loved ones, tucked safely deep within the darkest reaches of the individual,” explains Aaron Rossetto.

“New Private Window explores these stories often kept secret. The title refers to the option in modern Web browsers that starts an untracked session, leaving no search or site traces behind for others to discover. Building up layers of guitar tracks, synthesizers, and thick choir-like background vocals gives the songs on the EP a sense of impenetrability and shelter from prying eyes (or ears) – in much the same way as, say, opening a private browser window would do.”

Inspired by the Phil Spector “wall of sound” style production fuzzy, pitch-bent, all-enveloping guitar-driven sound, as seen in Jesus and Mary Chain recordings, and equally by the poppy, harmony-laced sensibilities of the Beach Boys, this music fuses the rawness of the DIY esthetic with atmospheric waves of sound. The output is a lush textured and dreamy style of pop music.

‘New Private Window’ is preceded by eight other EPs, seven of which were released on Rossetto’s own Infinitely Recursive Records imprint, along with several singles. Ask for joy is also featured on numerous shoegaze compilation albums, including several in Japan.

The lead single ‘Pinprick Eyes’ is being offered as a free download via the artist’s Bandcamp ataskforjoy.bandcamp.com, whetting the appetite for the forthcoming album. You can catch the full LP here too in early March as well as standard platforms such as iTunes, Amazon, etc.

Maria False - Spades

maria-false-spades-beko

Quite possibly the most beautiful thing I've heard so far this year. It's taken from the French band's new EP which will be released pretty soon on Beko although exactly when I can't tell you. It could quite possibly be before York City win another game though!

Mogwai - U-235

Taken from the forthcoming LP "Atomic"
